Another Easy Photo Ornament Gift Idea

Every year I have the child care kiddos make Christmas gifts for their parents, usually something “big” and a photo ornament. One year the photo ornaments were based on blank wood cut-outs but this time I went even simpler and started with a craft foam kit.

True confession: I don’t always try projects out ahead of time to make sure they work. Sometimes that’s OK, sometimes it’s a train wreck. This time I did make a sample one, and I’m VERY glad I did!

The kit came with precut foam pieces and “peel off glue dots” which sound super-easy, but are a nightmare with toddlers who don’t have enough small muscle control to peel the dots off, much less get them off their fingers. When I can’t peel the paper off a glue dot it’s a pretty good indication that the kiddos won’t be able to either.

Regular glue doesn’t stick on craft foam so I pulled out the trusty bottle of Aileen’s Tacky Glue. The bows came in two pieces so I assembled them ahead of time, then I let the children decorate their wreaths with the sequins and put the bow wherever they wanted. I glued the photos to the back of the wreaths and wrote each child’s name and the year on the back, then threaded the cord in the holes and tied it. Hint: You can save time by gluing on both sides then laying items on a wire rack to dry rather than gluing just one side at a time.

I think they turned out really cute!

Walmart Beauty Box – Winter 2018

I feel kind of silly getting so excited about a box of samples, but some days you just need a little pick-me-up, and my Walmart Beauty Box arrived on one of those days.

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - OutsideThis may sound silly too, but these boxes are fabulous on their own! Not only are they pretty, but they’re sturdy too. I put them out in the playroom for the kiddos to build with or fill/dump, and they last for months! They also work great for Christmas presents that need a box but are too small for a normal sized box.

But I digress…

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - InsideI think this edition’s design is classy, with the metallic gold and black. Let’s see what’s inside!

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Lots of ProductsOooh, I likey!

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Degree MotionSenseDegree MotionSense Ultra Clear Invisible Solid Antiperspirant & Deodorant “Degree Ultra Clear Black + White Antiperspirant and Deodorant, with long-lasting MOTIONSENSE formula, offers powerful sweat and odor protection. The unique formula provides Ultra Clear protection against white marks on black clothes and yellow stains on whites. Degree deodorant with MOTIONSENSE Technology provides underarm odor and wetness protection–the more you move, the more it protects. Degree Ultra Clear Black + White combines our strongest protection against yellow stains with the same 48-hour protection you know so your clothes stay protected and so do you.”

Angel Face just mentioned that she’s switched to Degree MotionSense and LOVES it so I gave this to her. She was thrilled!

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Aveeno LotionAveeno Sheer Hydration Daily Moisturizing Lotion “Hydrate your skin with Aveeno Sheer Hydration Daily Moisturizing Lotion. This naturally hydrating sheer lotion absorbs in seconds for a fresh, powder-like feel you’ll want all year round. Clinically proven to relieve dry skin, this dermatologist-recommended moisturizing lotion with Active Naturals Oat replenishes and hydrates skin. It moisturizes for a full 24 hours, leaving you with velvety soft, beautiful, and healthy-looking skin. The lightweight, non-greasy formula is fragrance-free and non-comedogenic.”

I’ve loved Aveeno products for years so I was super excited to see this lotion in the box. I don’t use powder so I wasn’t thrilled with the “powder-like feel” on my legs, but I don’t mind it on my hands. This became my new “purse lotion.”

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Equate RazorEquate Women’s 5-Blade Razor with Replacement Cartridges “Enjoy a close, comfortable shave with an Equate Women’s 5-Blade Razor. It has an easy-to-use handle for a firm and secure grip. Each razor has a rounded cartridge and coated blades that help you shave every curve. A moisture halo and large lubrication strips with botanical oils allow it to glide smoothly over the skin. The ladies razor comes with a Freshpak dispenser and a tray for fresh blades and convenient shower storage. The package includes one razor and two replacement cartridges.”

I fell in love with the Venus Embrace years ago and although I’ve tried several razors that are supposed to be comparable, none ever came close. Until now. I LOVE this razor! In my opinion it shaves just as well as the Venus Embrace, and is cheaper too. If that wasn’t enough, it comes with a holder for the razor and replacement cartridges that suction-cups to the shower wall. Bonus! There are six people taking showers with over 20 bottles, tubes and cakes of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and soap so razor that suction cups to the shower wall is super handy.

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Peeling Gel MaskSoo Ae Purifying Brightening Peeling Gel “This gentle and effective Purifying Brightening Peeling Gel from Soo Ae will refine and clarify all skin types. It delivers superb and extra-gentle exfoliation to gently lift dead skin cells and unclog pores while restoring skin clarity and radiance. This peeling gel also improves absorption of skincare applications. Mild enough for even delicate skin.”

I love peel-off masks, but haven’t had time to try this one. One of my 2017 New Year Resolutions was to go to bed earlier to get more sleep. But I tend to get wrapped up in something then end up flying upstairs at the last minute, so I haven’t had time to do anything but the most basic bedtime routine. Yes, I realize I said 2017 – I didn’t do so well last year so I’m trying again this year. I probably need to set aside a night every week to use the mask samples I’ve accumulated. That’ll help me complete Resolutions #2 AND #3!

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - La BellaLa Bella Super Shine Serum Avocado Oil and Vitamin E Face & Body Oil + Aloe “Eliminates frizz & flyaway hair” and “La Bella Vitamin E Oil with Aloe hydrates and protects to give you softer and healthier-looking skin. It re-energizes with an antioxidant-rich blend, leaving you with a youthful glow. This La Bella oil evens out the complexion and skin tone. It helps minimize the appearance of scars, stretch marks and dryness or chapping. This oil blend is easy to use by just gently massaging it onto the face, the body or the hands every day.”

I tried the Vitamin E oil first and hated it. It was fluorescent yellow, runny I know it’s an oil, but some personal care oils are thickened, and didn’t absorb well – even after I rubbed it in my leg felt tacky. “No way am I getting this on my Lularoe leggings!” I thought to myself as I washed the oil off my leg and replace it with my usual Desert Oasis almond lotion.

After that fiasco I was a little scared to try the hair serum but I pulled up my big girl panties and went for it. I LOVE IT! As I’ve mentioned before, my hair tends toward fuzzy frizziness, but after using a nickel-sized amount of serum my hair was shinier, smoother, and silkier. And the effect lasts the three days I go between shampoos! I was able to get 4 uses out of the .25 fl oz sample, even using what I consider a generous amount. I’m definitely buying some of this next time we’re in Walmart!

Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2018 - Village Naturals Village Naturals Therapy Aches & Pains Muscle and Nighttime Relief Bath Soaks. “With Essential Oils & ExtractsRelieve sore muscles & joints by soaking in a bath with a comforting blend of Eucalyptus & cooling Menthol to ease your aches & pains. The combination of Sea Salt and Magnesium Sulfate help to draw out impurities and ease tired muscles. Infused with extracts of Spearmint & Matricaria to soften your skin while you soak your soreness away.Don’t have time for a full bath? Soak your feet in a footbath filled with warm water and Aches & Pains Mineral Bath Soak to relieve tired achy feet.98% Naturally DerivedNo Animal Testing” and “Village Naturals Therapy Aches + Pains Nighttime Relief Concentrated Mineral Bath Soak Lavender-Chamomile-Menthol. Relax plus unwind while soaking in our powerful blend of essential oils and extracts including lavender, chamomile and cooling menthol. The combination of sea salt and epsom salt helps to draw out impurities and ease tired muscles.”

At first I considered giving the Muscle Relief one to Jo-Bear for after soccer or lifting, but then I decided to save it for this summer when I’m sore from working on the house. The Nighttime one I’ll try one of the nights I set aside to do a mask and go to bed early. Really, I will.

So that’s the Walmart box – best $5 I’ve spent outside of Starbucks for a long time! I loved almost everything I tried and can’t wait to see what’s in the next one. If you decide to try any of these products drop me a line to let me know what you think. 🙂

Best Laid Plans #3

Back Siding OffThe guys made quick work of taking the last of the siding off. Says the lady who doesn’t go up and down the ladder… Our bedroom is on the other side of this wall so I wonder if we’ll notice any difference in sound or temperature now the siding is off, or later when the insulation is on.

Broken WindowThere was one minor mishap when Jo-Bear’s crowbar slipped, but the important thing is that he wasn’t hurt. We’d already planned to replace that storm window because it didn’t have a screen so it wasn’t a big deal. And cleaning up the broken glass was right in my wheelhouse – I’m good at cleaning things up. I’m so good at it that sometimes I clean things up before people are done with them. I can’t tell you how much Teacher loves that – NOT!

Men on LaddersNow that all the old siding is off it’s time to start putting up the insulation – hooray for progress! I was a little worried about the guys carrying those giant pieces of insulation up the ladders, but they’re super-light so I was worried about nothing. As usual. The guys decided to start at the bottom and work their way up because there would be less cutting and they could balance each row on the row beneath.

Grandpa, Teacher, Jo-Bear on LaddersThree generations working together – it makes my heart melt. Teacher and Jo-Bear have been doing ladder work while Grandpa’s job has been to cut the insulation, but somehow he snuck onto a ladder. Don’t tell Grandma!

Watching them work reminds me of the summer my parents built a screened-in porch on the back of our house. My dad and brothers did the construction while my Grandpa did the cutting. My dad always said that Grandpa was so good that Dad would say “We need a piece this big” while showing the size with his hands, and Grandpa would get it right.

Z-Man SittingJust a little tired, Z-Man? The boys and I have been busy with the old siding. First we carried it to the driveway, sorted it by length, and stacked against the fence. Then we made piles that weighed no more than 45 lbs and were no more than 4 feet long trash pick-up rules and duct taped them together. Finally we carried about one-third of them to the curb for this week’s pick up and stacked the rest against the fence until the next large item pick up day in two weeks. It doesn’t sound hard, but that siding is heavy!

Jo-Bear with InsulationThe insulation has a plastic coating on it so we don’t need to “wrap” the house, all we need to do is tape the seams. That saves some time and money!

Teacher on LadderTeacher is finishing the last piece for today while Jo-Bear and Grandpa discuss plans for tomorrow. Residing a house is all uncharted territory for us so there’s just as much “brain work” going into it as physical labor – if not more!

We’re learning as we go but hopefully we’ll make most of our mistakes on the back of the house where no one will see them. Each side should go easier as we and by “we” I mean “them” get more experience, but I’m sure each side will also present it’s own challenges. What an adventure!

More to come… LOTS more…

Target Beauty Box – March 2018

A while ago Princess and I decided to stop getting the Target Beauty Boxes because we weren’t thrilled with the products and had collected SO many samples we really didn’t need more. But a couple of weeks ago she messaged me a photo of the March beauty box and said “I’m seriously considering getting this one. It looks good this month!” I replied “Yeah, except the dry shampoo. Maybe I’ll get one too.” We went back and forth and realized that we each wanted different things so we could split a box.

I was REALLY excited to get the Beauty Box because we hadn’t gotten one for so long and it’d been months since my last Walmart one, so I was REALLY disappointed when Princess texted me “They cancelled our box!” Apparently there was a problem with the address on file, even though it was the same address all our previous boxes had come to.

We were both really bummed, but what can you do? I know, #firstworldproblems, right?

Then last week she got an email from Target saying that our Beauty Box order had shipped. Wait, what? They said the order had been cancelled by mistake and since it was their error they were sending it to us for free. Oh Happy Day!

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - OutsideIt arrived a couple of days ago – Oh Happy HAPPY Day!

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Hello SpringDo you want to see what’s inside?

Silly me, of course you do!

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - All ProductsSee – it’s chock full of goodies! Can you guess which ones Princess picked and which ones I picked? You might be surprised…

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Wet & Wild EyeshadowWet & Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Quad “Whether you’re a makeup pro or beginner, no makeup kit is complete without this Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Quad. Wet n Wild came back with some of the shades you know and love, this time in reformulated eyeshadow quads. This easy-to-blend eyeshadow palette features four buttery shades ranging from mattes to shimmers, clearly labeled to help you create your own custom look. Sweep one shade from lashline to brow bone for a simple look, or go for glam and mix and match all four — however you decide to sport these shades, you’re sure to look beautiful.”

You may have guessed that Princess claimed the eyeshadow, but I did! I was a little disappointed because I thought the rose shade was purple, but the rose is pretty too. They’re actually shades of brown, not grey, but I can’t adjust the photo to get the colors right. Check out Target’s photo to see the true colors. The shadows go on and blend easily but don’t last all day on me. Overall I think they’re just as good as other comparably-priced eyeshadows. I’m thinking of buying the purple palette for fun.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Olay Body WashOlay Cleansing Infusion Natural Glow with Crushed Ginger Body Wash “Redefine clean with Olay Micro scrubbing Cleansing Infusion Hydrating Glow Body Wash with Crushed Ginger. Our exclusive formula infuses a non-stripping cleanser with our best biorenewing hydrators to actually improve your skin’s condition as you wash. The creamy lather draws out surface dirt and impurities without drying the skin, while exfoliators renew skin’s texture. Our unique hydrating ingredients act more like your skin’s natural lipids to renew skin’s surface from within. Skin is left feeling smooth, clean and hydrated, so skin’s surface reflects light for a natural glow.”

I grew up in the “Oil of Olay” era so I always associated the Olay brand with “older” women. But their new products, like this body wash, are beginning to change my mind. I like it more than I thought I would – the scent is fantastic and it makes my skin really soft and smooth.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup “When you want to switch up your hair color without a permanent application, reach for the Color Crave Hair Makeup from Clairol®. This temporary hair makeup puts a little luxe in your locks — all under your control. Shimmering hair makeup provides stunning results visible on any hair color, even the darkest brunettes. Change your mind or your mood? No problem, as this hair makeup washes away easily with shampoo. With no ammonia, peroxide parabens or commitment, there’s no reason to not flaunt your locks.”

I’ll bet you think this one is mine, but Princess claimed it. She just dyed her hair blue-black and I can’t wait to see what it looks like with purple in it! I think everything is better in purple.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - St. Ives Skin Renewing Collagen Elastin Body Lotion “Youthful skin is always in! Wrap your body in this rich, renewing lotion for beautiful, supple skin. Made with 100% natural moisturizers (soybean oil and plant based glycerin) this non-greasy lotion absorbs quickly to give your skin a helping hand in times of need. Be sure to layer on once a day, and your skin will thank you for it. Who knew soybeans had natural moisturizing properties? Well we did actually. That’s why we put it in our lotions. Soybean oil is a real smoothie, gliding onto the skin and soaking right in.”

This was another product on Princess’s “Want” list. I’m a long-time fan of St. Ives lotion so I didn’t need a sample to convince me that it’s great.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - No7 Early Defence Glow Activating Serum “Find your glow in 7 days with NEW Early Defence GLOW ACTIVATING Serum from the UK’s #1 skincare brand, No7. Early Defense GLOW ACTIVATING Serum, with Ginseng and Vitamin C boosts skin’s natural renewal process to clear and refine pores for a glowing complexion. This powerful formula also supports your skin’s natural defenses, calming skin’s reactivity to stress and protecting by neutralizing damaging free radicals caused by the sun & pollution.”

This was another product I really wanted. I’ve only used it a couple of days so I haven’t noticed any “glowing” but it definitely makes my skin softer and smoother. I’m going to keep using it to see if the brightening claims are true.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Pantene Sheer Volume Foam Conditioner “Volumize every strand with the air-light nourishment of Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Foam Conditioner. Infused with Pro-V nutrients, this breakthrough in-shower formula boosts strands for 24 hours without the weigh-down of traditional cream conditioners. Just shampoo, rinse, condition hair with the totally weightless texture of this foaming conditioner and rinse again. Light enough for everyday use.”

I haven’t decided whether to try this or let the boys use it. My hair gets frizzy so I have better luck with “smoothing” products rather than volume-boosting ones. It smells good, so it’s got that going for it.

Target Beauty Box March 2018 - Nexxus Clean & Pure Refreshing Mist Dry Shampoo “Nexxus DRY SHAMPOO Refreshing Mist weightlessly cleanses hair in between regular washes, providing refreshing volume and fluidity. This lightweight formulation extends the life of voluminous styles.”

Like I’ve said before, I’m not a fan of dry shampoo. So even though I like Nexxux products in general, it wasn’t hard to let Princess have this one. Besides, the term “voluminous” in reference to my hair is usually not a good thing – it’s like when someone says “she’s got a great personality” or “she means well.”

So that’s the March 2018 Target Beauty Box! I’m definitely glad we got it this month, and will be taking a peek at the April one to see what it looks like.

I won’t ask how many products you guessed right on, but you can post your total if you want.

The Best Laid Plans #2

Yesterday the guys got a great start on tearing the old siding off the house. College Boy was off work today so he came to help.

Love Bug & Caesar BoyLove Bug and Caesar Boy came along. Aren’t they getting big?!

Teacher on LadderThere’s Teacher up on the ladder again.

Jo-Bear Climbing LadderAnd there goes Jo-Bear too. He climbs up and down like he was born on a ladder. I can verify that he wasn’t!

Grandpa and BoysGrandpa is teaching the boys how to take nails out of the wood. I love this photo because I remember my grandpa teaching my brothers and I how to do stuff like that. Z-Man and iMatt ended up being really good nail-removers.

College BoyCollege Boy vs Nail. I know who’s going to win, and it ain’t the nail!

Family WorkingThe family that works together… gets the work done more quickly so we can enjoy the Fourth of July sooner.

Broken BoardThis shows how easily the siding breaks. I’m no She-Ra, but I still did this with my bare hands.

iMattiMatt would rather be pulling siding off the house than picking it up from the ground.

Teacher on the Back of the HouseCollege Boy inherited my dislike for heights so he did the bottom part and now Teacher’s starting on the top part. It’s a lot more work than you’d expect – just climbing up the ladder, not falling off, and climbing back down again wears them out.

Apparently our house has been at least 5 different colors. The white and yellow were before our time, but it was pink when we bought it. Yes, we bought a pink house, a la John Cougar Mellancamp style. We first painted it grey, then most recently green. I’m going to miss the green, but I like what’s replacing it too.

It looks like they’re about ready to start packing it up for the day. I’d better get inside and start cleaning up – we’re hosting Fourth of July supper and fireworks!

More to come…
