Sleep, Glorious Sleep!

Teacher is one of those people who can fall asleep almost anywhere, anytime. And he’s not the only one.

Me not so much.

I’ve always had a hard time falling asleep, even when I was a kid. Sometimes I know there’s something on my mind, like planning an anniversary party, or a wedding, but most of the time I have no idea what’s keeping me awake.

Since sleep is so important to good health I’ve been trying to get more sleep by going to bed earlier, but often I end up laying in bed staring at the ceiling.

If you’re like me you could probably use these tips and tricks for getting a good night’s sleep.

Sleep Problems - Busy BrainMost of the time when I can’t fall asleep it’s because my brain won’t shut off. In addition to a pre-bedtime ritual, shutting off electronics about 30 minutes beforehand can help your mind start to relax and get ready to sleep. A book can help too, especially if you choose something boring.

Sleep Problems - HungerI generally try to avoid post-supper snacking, but some nights my belly lets me know I’d better have something or it’ll keep me awake all night. My favorite snacks are a handful of almonds or some air-popped popcorn with a little butter and salt. Is there any other way to eat popcorn?!

Sleep Problems - TemperatureJo-Bear loves to cuddle under a pile of blankets in a frigid room while iMatt loves to be under a mountain of blankets no matter the temperature. I prefer fewer covers a ceiling fan to keep the room from being stuffy. We use ours year round, adding a box fan to draw in cool air when the windows are open.

Sleep Problems - TiredThen there are the nights you’re just not tired. Rather than staring at the ceiling, get out of bed and find something relaxing to do like reading a book, doing puzzles or browsing a magazine. Keep the electronic devices turned off and any lights or music low so you don’t wake your brain up any more than it already is.

Try out some of these tips then let me know how they work for you. Goodnight, sleep tight; don’t let the bed bugs bite!

  1. All really good tips. That one of having a busy mind is such a pain. It’s awful waking up at 2am thinking about something and then you can’t get back to sleep
